You will want to pack all necessary pet supplies. If forgotten, the purchase of specialized items may require an unplanned trip off island and will take time away from vacation activities.

  1. Can I take my pet on the beach?

    Absolutely, Ocracoke offers 16 miles of beach which is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. You are certain to find the perfect spot for a family gathering or discover a private area to relax. For information about the Cape Hatteras National Seashore please visit www.NPS.gov/.

  2. Is there a boarding kennel on Ocracoke Island?

    Yes, Sandy Paws Bed & Biscuit Inn is a seasonal kennel that offers both daily and long term accommodations. Doggie day care is also available. The inn offers a climate controlled environment with unlimited access to your pet. Conveniently located just off Highway 12, across from the Variety Store.   3. My pet needs special food, should I bring it or can I purchase it on the Island?

    A basic selection of pet food and cat litter is available for purchase on Ocracoke. If your pet has special diet requirements, you should bring these items with you. Having to obtain specialized food would require a trip off Ocracoke.

  4. Is there a veterinarian on Ocracoke Island?

    There is no veterinarian office located on Ocracoke. The closest pet clinic is located on Hatteras Island. There is a mobile unit in Hatteras Village and a clinic in Avon. Both units have limited days and hours. Please refer to Vets and Pet Supplies/Services

  5. What about fleas and ticks?

    Fleas and ticks are abundant on Ocracoke and throughout the Outer Banks. Protecting your pet can provide for a more comfortable vacation.

  6. Do I have to pay a special fee for my rental if I bring my pet?

    Most of our pet friendly cottages do not include additional fees to bring your pet. Cottages requiring additional fees indicate this in their individual property description.

  7. Does "Pet Friendly" also include my cat?

    For the most part "Pet Friendly" means just that. However, there are several homes that only allow dogs due to allergies related to cats.   8. What else should I bring to Ocracoke for my pet?
    • As with any travel involving your pet, do not forget to bring medical records, including proof of rabies vaccine.
    • Have a proper identification tag affixed to your pet’s collar including temporary identification that includes your name, Ocracoke address and phone number.
    • Bring a photograph of your pet for identification if they were to get lost.
    • If your pet is crate trained, they may be more comfortable in their vacation surroundings if their crate is available to them along with their bed and some favorite toys.
    • Bring food and bowls including a water bowl to bring to the beach to avoid pets drinking salt water.
    • If your dog is a swimmer, bring extra towels as you will want to rinse your pet after a swim.
    • Supplies to clean up after your pet.
    • Also bring a maximum 6 foot leash so that they can enjoy The Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
